Cate Blanchett will play in the School for Good and Evil.
Director Paul Feig has confirmed that the actress will play the role of narrator in the Netflix fantasy film, which will also star Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron and Laurence Fishburne.
Feig said at the annual Women in Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles, “Actually, we just brought in Cate Blanchett as the narrator, so we’re really excited about that.
“It hasn’t actually been announced yet – it’s already there.”
The film is an adaptation of a fantasy novel by Soman Chainani and follows best friends Sophie and Agatha (played by Sophia Ann Caruso and Sophia Wylie respectively) at the School for Good and Evil, where ordinary children are taught to be heroes and villains.
Sophie expects to be chosen for the School for Good, while Agatha considers herself evil, though their friendship is tested when the roles are reversed.
Feig, whose previous films include Bridesmaids and Last Christmas, was excited to “create the world from scratch” with a new film due for release on the streaming service in September.
He said: “This is the first time I have had to create a world from scratch. I read it and it’s a beautiful story about these two young women and their friendship and how their friendship saves them going through this crazy experience. And I was like, “I’m in.”
Soman had previously expressed satisfaction that Fig was commissioned to bring his story to the screen.
The author said, “To have one of your favorite directors adapt your book into a Netflix movie is an honor and a dream.
“Paul Feig is a brilliant director and master of tone – perfect for the twists and turns of ‘School for Good and Evil’. I have no doubt that it will become a real classic fairy tale.”
