Renowned tourism expert, Professor Jafar Jafari arrived in the Maldives to attend the UNWTO Global Tourism Summit.
Prof. Jafari was received at Velena International Airport by Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdullah Mawsum and a team of the Ministry, along with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) officials.
Professor Jafari will deliver a keynote address at the opening session of the Summit.
Professor Jafari is Professor of Hospitality and Tourism at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, USA. He came to this position after graduating as a cultural anthropologist and a graduate in hotel administration. He also holds an honorary doctorate.
His contribution to the academic community transcends international borders and institutions. In addition to research and teaching, Professor Jafari holds numerous positions on the editorial board and has created seminal journals, books and networks within tourism research.
He is the founding editor of Annals of Tourism Research: A Social Sciences Journal. Editor-in-chief of the book series on the social sciences of tourism; Co-editor of the book series Bridging Tourism Theory and Practice; editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Tourism; Editor-co-founder of the department of information technology and tourism; Co-founder of TRINET: Tourism Research Information Network; and founding president of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism.
The UNWTO Global Summit will be held from 15 to 16 June at Crossroads Maldives and Paradise Island Resort and Spa. The summit consists of three sessions; UNWTO Global Summit on Community Based Tourism – Thematic Session 1: Gastronomy Tourism, UNWTO Global Summit on Community Based Tourism – Thematic Session 2: Agritourism and UNWTO Global Summit on Community Based Tourism – Thematic Session 3: Community Based Tourism.
Prior to the Global Summit on 14 June, Crossroads Maldives will host the UNWTO Ministerial Roundtable on Tourism Sustainability through Innovation and Digitalization in Asia Pacific.
