Musical performances return for the Great Texas Balloon Race | Arts and Entertainment

Live entertainment is returning to the Great Texas Balloon Race this year, with Grammy-nominated Little Texas headlining.

Balloon race chairman Michelle Ford said it’s been three years since the event, which is scheduled from Friday to Sunday, included live music performances.

“First COVID and then last year there were only competitions (flights),” she said. “The last time we had entertainment was in 2019.”

Little Texas will take the stage on Saturday at 9:30 pm at the Longview Convention Center.

The group was nominated for several Grammy Awards, and its first radio release in 1991, “Some Guys Have All the Love”, was a Top 10 hit. Their second album produced three No. 1 singles: “What Might Have Been”, “God Bless Texas”, and “My Love”.

Band members Porter Howell on vocals and lead guitar and Dwayne Props on bass and vocals are Longview natives.

“We’re excited to see them at what they call a homecoming concert,” Ford said. “The last time I remember them being in Longview was in 2015.”

During its heyday, Little Texas had 11 Top 20 singles (with 3 Top 10s and 3 No. 1s) and received several Grammy, CMA and ACM nominations, winning ACM for the 1993 Top Vocal Group nomination. To this day, the band members continue to write or co-write, record and play every note on every single they have released.

Other artists include The Social Club, Molly Ringwalds and Cody Wayne.

“Friday night at 6:30 we have the Social Club, a local band that plays top 40 music from the 60s to the present,” Ford said. “Molly Ringwalds will play at 9:30 and play 80s music.

Cody Wayne will open the Saturday show at 6:30 pm.

“Cody Wayne from East Texas is doing a full country gig,” Ford said. “This list of artists reaches a wide variety of ages and musical genres.”

Gates open at 4:00 pm on Friday and Saturday. Ford said public parking would be at 1123 Jaycee Drive.

Tickets can be purchased at OuthouseTickets.com or at Visit Longview Marketplace, 109 W. Tyler St. in downtown Longview, Brookshire’s and Super 1. Children under 12 years are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
