Lifting travel restrictions, CLT airport sees large crowds

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Starting Sunday, international travelers returning to the United States will no longer need to be tested for COVID despite an increase in COVID cases locally and statewide.

Passengers tell Queen City News they think it’s time to end the COVID testing mandate, largely because some places, they say, are not as easy to find testing sites as they are in the United States.

As for the increase in the incidence, they will take precautions, maybe in a mask, but they say that it’s time to see the world.

“The last couple of years have been very difficult to travel and I think the world is finally opening up again,” said Steve Goggans, who travels from Charlotte to Budapest.

One of the last remaining COVID requirements for air travel will soon be submitted.

The official says the Biden administration is lifting the requirement that travelers arriving in the United States must be tested for COVID before boarding their flight.

Effective Sunday at 00:01.

“A river cruise from Budapest to Vienna, then overland to Prague,” said Goggans, describing his vacation.

COVID canceled Goggans’ trip three times. Now on his fourth try, he’s glad he doesn’t have to worry about getting tested for COVID before returning home.

“Definitely delighted! I’m a businessman, definitely worried about going back and falling into a trap. We knew people who crossed the border and were trapped for days,” Goggans said.

“It suits me because it was very troublesome, we were in France a couple of times and it was very difficult to pass the test to return,” said Laura Leach, who travels to Spain.

Even though she’s going to be traveling all over the world, she’s still worried about the rise in COVID cases back home in Charlotte.

“Yes, taking precautions. We’ll be outdoors most of the time, so hopefully everything will be alright,” Leach said.

Officials say the CDC will review the suspension of the COVID testing requirement in 90 days, and it could be reinstated if necessary.
