IATA Tourist Center
You may have already seen the IATA name on your airline ticket or in the window of your local travel agency. It is the International Air Transport Association that regulates airlines around the world and supports the development of global standards.
IATA Travel Center is a global destinations database that uses data from Timatic’s own system.
When you check in for an international flight, Timatic is a system that ensures that your travel documents meet government requirements for entry to your destination and allows you to board the aircraft.
Over 700 million checks were made in 2019 to help travelers get where they wanted to go.
The information is based on your country of origin, destination, estimated travel dates, and importantly, how restrictions apply to the passport you will be traveling with.
Even if you live elsewhere, there may be additional restrictions for passport holders from certain countries, even if you don’t normally live there.
Timatic data is used in the IATA Travel Pass app, a fairly simple app that lets you check your destination’s entry requirements, find the nearest lab if you need a negative pre-flight test, and upload your vaccination certificates.
More than 200 rule changes are processed and reviewed daily. Updates are made manually after review and approval from over 2,000 government and airline sources.
Another important resource is Sherpa, a private Canadian organization founded in 2015. It has created a more interactive and user-friendly platform to provide travelers with the information they need to keep their trips running smoothly.
The company says its goal is to simplify traveler identification and help travel providers get their customers to their destinations as efficiently as possible in the current travel environment.
Sherpa uses a universal connection that it licenses to airlines and online travel booking websites such as Expedia, which allow users of those websites to learn about entry requirements and travel regulations before making a booking.
Users can customize the information based on their passport country and individual vaccination status. Sherpa site also provides direct links or access to download official documents from government websites if you need more information or proof from an official source.
There’s a handy FAQ section and links to government websites where you can register your travel intentions, as well as provide information to expedite your border control if needed.
The company lists many of the world’s largest airlines and travel retailers as…
