LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Dodge Cat could make the BET Awards her world later this month.
The chart-topping artist received six nominations for the show, which aired live on June 26 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Doja Cat is in contention for Top R&B Pop Artist, Top Hip Hop Artist, Album of the Year for her No. 1 hit “Planet Her” and BET Her for “Woman.” Her Kiss Me More with SZA was nominated for Video of the Year and Best Collaboration.
Drake and Ari Lennox came in second in terms of nominations, with four nodes each. Several others received three nominations, including Baby Kim, Silk Sonic, Chloe Bailey, Future, HER, Jazmine Sullivan, Ye (formerly known as Kanye West), Kendrick Lamar, Lil Baby, Mary J. Blige, and Thames.
Actor Taraji P. Henson (Empire) will host the BET Awards for the second year in a row.
Winners in 19 categories, including film and sports awards, will be selected by the BET Voting Academy, made up of professionals and entertainment enthusiasts.
Drake will take on Kendrick Lamar, Future, Jay Cole, Jack Harlow, Ye and Lil Baby for the title of Top Male Hip Hop Artist. Doja Cat will compete against Cardi B, Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj and Saweetie for the best female hip-hop artist.
WNBA star Britney Greener, whose detention in Russia was recently extended by one month, has been nominated for Female Athlete of the Year. The two-time Olympic gold medalist who plays for the Phoenix Mercury was detained at a Moscow airport in February after vape cartridges containing cannabis-derived oil were allegedly found in her luggage. She faces drug smuggling charges that carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Griner is nominated in the same category as Candace Parker, Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams, Sha’Karri Richardson and Simone Biles.
