EXCLUSIVE: Former Disney CEO David Levine is leaving Moonbug Entertainment, a company that specializes in children’s entertainment, Deadline has learned. The popular executive has been heading the studio since December 2020.
Moonbug, based in London and Los Angeles, was launched in 2018 and quickly made a name for itself after its Little Baby Homeless The series became a YouTube sensation and two years later, Levin was hired to expand his brands. These also include YouTube and Netflix hits. Cocomelone as well as Blippy.
Moonbug confirmed his departure in a statement to Deadline: “We thank David for his dedication and hard work that has led Moonbug Studios to a period of significant growth.”
According to a LinkedIn post, Levine is now leaving to “explore new areas” and “look forward to new adventures.”
Levin is best known for spending 16 years at Disney as VP of Media Networks and Content for Europe and Africa, during which time he ran local children’s channels, commissioned and developed the Emmy-nominated Evermoormore First class chef, Lodge as well as Dalmatian street, 101.
In a LinkedIn post, Levin said, “It has been a great experience leading the Moonbug Studio team behind over 25 digital series; original Cocomelone, Blippy as well as Little Baby Homeless series for leading streamers such as Netflix and Amazon Kids+; dozens of albums, podcasts for Spotify and more; providing content to children around the world in more than 25 languages; and expanding presence in our content,” added Levine.
Candle Media of Tom Staggs and Kevin Mayer acquired Moonbug in a deal that could be worth $3 billion in November 2021. His programs appear in 27 languages on over 100 platforms worldwide such as Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, HBO, Amazon and Sky.
