Canada cancels vaccination mandates for domestic travel from June 20

The federal government of Canada announced today that it will suspend the mandate to vaccinate passengers traveling by air or train within the county effective June 20. Unvaccinated Canadians have not been able to travel domestically since November 2021, when the government introduced rules preventing unvaccinated Canadians from flying or traveling by train within the county’s borders.

Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominique Leblanc told reporters that while some Covid mandates are on hold, the government will return them if the situation worsens. “If the situation worsens, we are ready to return to the policies necessary to protect Canadians. We have no regrets for being cautious when it comes to a virus that has tragically claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Canadians and millions of people around the world.” He went on to say that “Throughout this pandemic, our government’s approach has been based on close collaboration with our provincial and territorial partners. We all have a role to play in keeping Canadians safe. Our government will continue to make decisions based on the best public health advice and adjust its measures accordingly.”

In a press release, the government said that: Following a successful vaccination campaign, 32 million (or nearly 90%) eligible Canadians have been vaccinated against Covid-19 and cases have decreased. Canadians have stepped up to protect themselves and those around them, and hospitalization and death rates are also declining across the country, with Canada having one of the highest vaccination rates in the world.

Vaccination continues to be one of the most effective ways to protect Canadians, including young Canadians, our healthcare system and our economy. Everyone in Canada should be up to date with the recommended Covid-19 vaccines, including booster doses, to prepare for the fall. The Government of Canada will continue to work with provinces and territories to help more Canadians get the shots they are eligible for.

Throughout the pandemic, the Government of Canada’s response has been based on expert advice, sound science and research. As the Covid-19 pandemic has evolved, public health measures and recommendations have emerged, including vaccination requirements, which were always intended as a temporary measure.”

Other public health measures, such as wearing a mask, continue to apply and will continue to apply throughout the traveler’s journey…
